Background

The retirement of this organisation’s long-standing principal executive officer prompted a decision by the Board to conduct a recruitment campaign in-house, to be managed by Rachel Maidment under the direction of the Chairman of the Board.

Key skills used

· Copywriting
· Negotiating advertising rates
· Briefing graphic designers
· Administration and planning
· Developing assessment criteria

Details of the project

Publicity: Writing and designing the advertisement; researching media to identify the most appropriate placement for the advertisement; negotiating rates; briefing an agency to create the artwork for the printed advertisement; liaising with Government departments to secure additional publicity for the vacancy.

Administration: Developing a spreadsheet to record interest in the vacancy to track applicants’ progress through the recruitment process. Ensuring applicants received regular notification of their progress.

Documentation: Liaising with HR experts for guidance on developing key documents (eg: application forms and terms of appointment) in line with current good practice.

Recruitment: Liaising with an HR expert to develop assessment criteria for use throughout the recruitment process, then using this criteria to assess written applications and interviews.

Planning: Liaising with Selection Panel members in the planning of first and second interviews; developing, producing and disseminating briefing papers and assessment forms; ensuring arrangements were in place for the busy programme of interviews; and attending all interviews in a secretarial capacity.

Outcome

After responding to nearly 80 expressions of interest in the position, processing 40 applications, and overseeing first and second interviews, a new Chief Executive was appointed, within budget and on schedule.
